BEIJING, Jan. 21 (Xinhua) -- The following are the updates on the global fight against the COVID-19 pandemic.

MOSCOW -- Russia registered 21,887 more COVID-19 cases over the past 24 hours, roughly the same as the number reported in the previous day, the country's COVID-19 response center said Thursday.

The national tally has thus increased to 3,655,839 with 67,832 deaths and 3,054,218 recoveries, the center said.

JERUSALEM -- Israel's COVID-19 reproduction number, also known as the R number, has dropped to 0.99, according to a report issued by the country's Coronavirus National Information and Knowledge Center on Thursday.

The R number is an indicator used to determine how fast COVID-19 is spreading, as reproduction rate means the average number of people that a person carrying coronavirus goes on to infect.

JAKARTA -- The confirmed COVID-19 cases in Indonesia increased by 11,703 in the past 24 hours to 951,651, with the death toll adding by 346 to 27,203, the Health Ministry said on Thursday.

According to the ministry, 9,087 more patients were discharged from hospitals, bringing the total number of recoveries to 772,790.

BEIJING -- CoronaVac, an inactivated COVID-19 vaccine developed by China's Sinovac Biotech Ltd., has shown good efficacy in clinical trials and can offer broad-spectrum protection against different coronavirus strains, according to Sinovac Chairman and CEO Yin Weidong.

The phase-3 clinical trials of the Sinovac vaccine are being mainly conducted in Brazil, Indonesia and Turkey.

COLOMBO -- COVID-19 cases in Sri Lanka surpassed the 55,000 mark on Thursday after over 700 new patients were recorded, official statistics from the health ministry showed here.

According to official figures, out of the 55,189 patients reported to date, 47,215 patients have recovered and been discharged from hospitals, with the number of active cases standing at 7,700, and 274 deaths have been reported from the virus.

MANILA -- The Department of Health (DOH) of the Philippines reported on Thursday 1,783 new COVID-19 cases, bringing the total number of confirmed cases in the Southeast Asian country to 507,717.

The death toll climbed to 10,116 after 74 more patients died from the viral disease, the DOH said. It added 500 more patients recovered, raising the total number of recoveries to 467,475.

SYDNEY -- People living in Australia's third-largest city of Brisbane will no longer need to wear a mask in indoor venues from Friday as the state of Queensland has put the local spreading of a mutant strain of COVID-19 under control.

"From 1:00 a.m. tomorrow we will be back to having amongst the lowest restrictions in our economy in the country -- this is great news for business, great news for tourism, and great for the people of Queensland to celebrate," the state's Health Minister Yvette D'Ath said.

NEW DELHI -- India's COVID-19 tally rose to 10,610,883 on Thursday as 15,223 new cases were registered during the past 24 hours, said the latest data from the federal health ministry.

According to the official data, the death toll mounted to 152,869 with 151 new deaths.

ULAN BATOR -- Mongolia added 16 COVID-19 cases in the past 24 hours after 12,940 tests had been conducted across the country, the National Center for Communicable Diseases (NCCD) said Thursday.

The latest cases were locally transmitted or detected in the country's capital Ulan Bator, Amarjargal Ambaselmaa, head of the NCCD's Surveillance Department, said at a daily press conference.
