Aliyev: No referendum on self-determination in Karabakh

23 Oct 2020, 00:07 GMT+10

PanARMENIAN.Net - Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev has said 'there will be no referendum on self-determination in Nagorno-Karabakh'.

'No, of course not. There will be no referendum in Nagorno-Karabakh. We will not agree to that. We did not agree to that during the negotiations, and now that we have returned a significant part of the territories, this is out of the question,' Aliyev said in an interview, according to RIA Novosti.

At the same time, he noted, Azerbaijan does not reject the deployment of observers and peacekeepers in Karabakh, but said that Baku will put forward its conditions.

The Armenian side has repeatedly said that the right to self-determination of Nagorno-Karabakh and its status are strategically important for Armenia.

Azerbaijan, with help from Turkey and Syrian and Libyan mercenaries deployed by Ankara, started a war against Karabakh (Artsakh) in the morning of September 27. The Armenian side has reported deaths and injuries both among the civilian population and the military. Foreign and local journalists too have been injured in Azeri shelling of towns and villages.
