SYDNEY, NSW, Australia - Shares were mostly weaker in Asia on Monday, while the U.S. dollar and the Japanese yen rose sharply.

The Japanese stock market climbed but the gains were limited.

The worst performer was Hong Kong's Hang Seng which shed 504.72 points or 2.06% to 23,950.19.

The Australian All Ordinaries lost 44.10 points or 0.73% to 6,013.50.

China's Shanghai Composite dipped 44.10 points or 0.63% to 3,316.95.

The lone ranger, the Nikkei 225 added 40.90 points or 0.18% to 23,360.30.

The euro tumbled to 1.1777 by the Sydney close Monday. The British pound spiraled down to 1.2844. The Swiss franc fell to 0.9150.

The Canadian dollar fell sharply to 1.3237. The Australian dollar weakened to 1.3237. The New Zealand dollar was lower at 0.6708.

The Japanese yen, going against the trend, climbed to 104.10.
