SYDNEY, Australia - Stocks advanced on Monday in a positive start to the week.
The big action was in Tokyo where the Nikkei 225 hit a monthly high, jumping 494.93 points or 2.22% to 22,784.74.
In Hong Kong, the Hang Seng rose 44.71 points or 0.17% to 25,772.12.
China's Shanghai Composite climbed 59.96 points or 1.77% to 3,443.29.
The Australian All Ordinaries closed 53.00 points or 0.88% higher at 6,089.30.
On the forex market it was a dull day Monday The U.S. dollar remained weak but little changed from its closing levels in New York on Friday.
The euro was changing hands at 1.1307 late in Sydney trading on Monday. The British pound was strong at 1.2611. The Japanese yen eased a touch to 107.07.
The Swiss franc remained well bid at 0.9420, as did the Canadian dollar at 1.3572.
The Australian ans New Zealand dollars were in demand but little changed from their Friday close, at 0.6960 and 0.6556 respectively.
