Moderate gains for Asian bourses

SYDNEY, Australia - Stocks in Asia were broadly higher on Tuesday, adding to gains of a day earlier.

In Hong Kong however markets were correcting.

At the close of trading Tuesday, the Australian All Ordinaries was ahead 14.30 points or 0.23% at 6,185.00.

In Japan, the Nikkei 225 rose 20.80 points or 0.10% to 21,302.65.

China's Shanghai Composite advanced 33.29 points or 1.22% to 2,754.30.

In Hong Kong, going against the trend the Hang Seng sagged 76.82 points or 0.27% to 28,270.09 in late trading.

On foreign exchange markets, the U.S. dollar was notionally higher across. the board. Against the euro it cruised to 1.1297.

The British pound eased to 1.2900 while the Japanese yen lost a few basis points to 110.68.

The Swiss franc dipped to 1.0056. The Canadian dollar inched down to 1.3258, while the Australian and New Zealand dollars slid to 0.7114 and 0.6832 respectively.

Overnight on Wall Street stocks were stronger across the board.

At the close of trading Monday, the Dow Jones industrials were ahead 443.86 points or 1.74% at 25,883.25.

The Standard and Poor's 500 rose 29.87 points or 1.09% to 2,775.60.

The tech-laden Nasdaq Composite added 45.46 points or 0.61% to 7,472.41.
