Italian Catholics furious over crucifix ruling

Kyrgyzstan News.Net

Classrooms in Italy will no longer be able to display the Christian crucifix.
Classrooms in Italy will no longer be able to display the Christian crucifix.

While there has been a law in Italy since the 1920's requiring crucifixes to be hung in schools, the European Court of Human Rights has ruled the practice violates the rights of parents who wish to educate their children as they see fit.

The court has said the practice runs counter to the child's right to freedom of religion.

The case against the Christian symbol was brought by an Italian mother who said she wanted a secular education for her children.

She had complained to the European court that her children had to attend a public school in northern Italy that displayed crucifixes in every room.

The Vatican has immediately objected to the ruling, saying the court had no right to intervene and will be seen as ignoring the role of the crucifix as a sign of God's love and unity.

The Italian Education Minister, Mariastella Gelmini, has reacted by saying the crucifix is a symbol of tradition rather than a mark of Catholicism.

The Italian government has already indicated it will appeal against the decision.

forceful act of religion

While those who venerated the crucifix might be offended, it was time that such a tradition of love is finally taken out of the school for free choice, the students to decide. The meaning of the cross might signify love but for certain that’s not the way the catholics presented to the people in the dark ages. Many died gruesome deaths under the hands of those who professed the so called loving cross.

Furious Over Crucifix Ruling

Never In my life time. Would I believe what is going on now. To tear down the Catholic religion. We, as well as everyone else. Have the right to practice our beliefs. Not to be pushed in a dark corner.

Delighted over Crucifix Ruling

Yes Saint, you can practice your beliefs, but DON’T parade your bullshit and try to force it onto school children.

As to sandra1969, I’m not religious and oh dear I’m NOT a criminal or drug user.
Why would I allow a muslim to force their beliefs on me?

If you want your children to have a religious learning experience, you can send them to a private, run by the church school.
But I want my children to learn of the physical and logical world around them, things that will actually help them in their lives.

love jesus

Dear Sandra 1969,

You have urged people (Catholics) to show Jesus Pictures & conduct prayers before the start of schools,to preserve the religion. well, ye, that is up to you.
Let me share with you that to the surprize of many cristains, Muslims too love Jesus (Isa-ibni-Maryam). You love him becuase u think he is the God & your savior, but we love him as he was a great messenger of God born to a great respectful woman named Maryam. He was born miraculously & he is still alive & will come one day again to testify that he was not God as alleged by some people.

Regarding your comment that Muslims follow their religion strictly & thay you may also be converted one day. yes, that is true. No body will force you but just exlore the truth of Islam & if you find it true & convincing then come sooner rather than later. I pray for all.

Next step, ban the teaching of any religion to minors.

Whilst adult Catholics may see the crucifix as a symbol of their faith a child only sees the glorification of brutal capital punishment. Keep religion in churches and reality in schools.
It is about time we outlawed teaching any religion to minors at all. It’s also about time humanity outgrew its interest in dangerous myths and silly superstitions.

Arrogant Atheists

Dear AllGodsAreDead,

What makes you so certain that religion is nothing but dangerous myths and silly superstitions? Why do you think that religion is not a reality? The exitance or non-extance of God has not or perhaps cannot be proved (scientifically) and therefore logic dictates that one must accept the possibility of either potulate being true. Hence, Creation and Evolution are both theories worthy of study, but neither can be proven, conclusively, either way.

Your post is nothing more that your opinion, which we can see is quite closed-minded. Removing crucifixes from classroms will not make the world a better place. It only rearranges the furniture.

I cry for you

Doom - when you don't have values

Because of the mass abandonment of their cultures and faith, Western societies are rapidly falling apart. They are plenty of morale decay and massive amount of disfunctionalities. Families are falling apart. Society have become weak. With falling birth rates they will disappear.

Human rights include the right to have a Cross

Italy has a two thousand year history which has been shaped by the teachings of Christ.. it change our country from one of war and domination to a country of Art, Love, Music, Food and creativity! Now what? One womans complaint means that every Italian is denied the right to the tradition that has made our country loved by so much of the world? Please! where are our rights!

Hear hear. Children shouldn’t be indoctrinated with superstitions. They should be allowed to make their own decision as to whether they believe a book of fairy tales or scientific theories.

rather than 'shaped by whatever the Catholic Church says' you just point out how brainwashed you are and why baseless belief systems are inherently dangerous. Also why doesn’t your concept of Human Rights include the right to not have to put up with the religious icons of others? Somehow I think if you were a Christian in a predominantly non Christian country you wouldn’t want your kids to have to see the symbols of another religion on a daily basis. And to 'Open Minded' No! Creation is not now, nor will it ever be, worthy of study.

It’s simple if you want to reject and don’t respect the principles of a Catholic country then pack up your shit and leave. You are guests and abide by the rules of that nation, if you disagree you can leave and move somewhere else

Italy is NOT a catholic country. But the state of the Vatican is.

It is a missconception, Italy is not a catholic country, it is a Republic, and the vatican does not run Italy, even though for a long time has had a foothold upon Italy’s politicians.

Infact underhanded the vatican, wants to dictate his religious policies upon the Italian people.

I take my hat off to this courageous lady that is trying to wake those dormant religious fanatics to realize, that we in Italy have a separation between religion and state, and all people’s rights must be guaranteed, both religious as well as unreligious, and religious symbols MUST be kept out of public places. Because they belong in their place of worship.

I quess, some Italians find it very hard to adopt to respect the rights of others, regarding religious issues, some think only about their religious supremacy.

Jews eliminating christian symbols little by little.

When I was a kid and we weren’t the 'Judeo-Christian' Jewish slaves. I remember the Christmas plays, the Manger outside the churches, the Christmas carol singing at X-mas and now only thr 'frikken' Jewish Menorah is legal most places. It’s time to clean house, folks. Any Zyklon-B cannisters at the nearby army surplus store?

multicultural europe

Things can only get worse in the EEC ,we see day by day our culture being erroded by immigrants who are welcomed to our country who then do not respect our traditions or history .
The women who was offended by the crusifix should go the an atheist country where she will feel at home.I would not like to be her when she meets Christ on judgement day.
Italy is a proud catholic nation and should remain so and i feel that the political correct EEC will one day crash with religeous clashes like in N,Ireland only this time it will be Muslim against Chistian and that will spreed like cancer through all of Europe.....The federal Europe will be a disaster.
