Indian on trial for sexually abusing stepdaughter in Singapore

An Indian national is on trial in Singapore's High Court on charges of sexually abusing his stepdaughter for two years starting when she was only 11, media reports said Tuesday.
The 37-year-old IT specialist faces a total of 42 counts, with the offences alleged to have taken place between January 2005 and February 2007 at the family home.
The accused, his 35-year-old wife and the girl possess permanent residency status in Singapore, The Straits Times said adding that both the girl and her mother, who are also Indian nationals, have left the country.
According to the reports, the accused has admitted to having sex with the girl at least once a month in statements made to police after his arrest in May 2007.
However, the defendant, who is representing himself in court, denied the allegations.
The prosecution is seeking to admit the man's statements as evidence, on the grounds that they amount to a voluntary confession.
He faces between eight and 20 years in jail, caning and a fine if convicted of rape. He faces up to 10 years in jail and a fine too for having oral sex with the minor.
The court ordered Monday that the identities of the accused and the girl should not be revealed to the media.
